the last toni.zone update ever

toni.zone 3

toni.zone 3.0 is here!!! you might notice things look a little worse! that's because i'm moving from a form-based approach to a more function-based approach. thumbnails simply make it harder for me to push content out! so... i removed them. now i can make posts to the website much more quickly! that's the whole point of this update. i changed a lot of things so that i could make content faster.

the entire point of this website in the first place was to be a replacement for my twitter account. i posted random stuff to twitter several times a day! and i want to treat toni.zone similarly. initially, i was a bit queasy on speeding up the toni.zone schedule, but that's simply because i was kind of unsure of how i wanted to spend my free time in a general sense.

when i think about spending so much money on a website without using it as extensively as i should be, though, that makes me really sad. so i'm wanting toni.zone to become my main creative output repertoire as opposed to just... sending things over discord. so get ready for--knock on wood--much more frequent posts! i'm gonna aim for every day at least. unless it specifically needs to be private for whatever reason, i am going to post every single thing i write, make, or compose in any way, shape or form onto this website from now on!

and with that... i do honestly think i'm satisfied with how the site both looks and functions. (as opposed to how the site looks and nothing else.) hence, this third overhaul will be the last major overhaul ever. (which is, of course, what i mean by the title.) i'll still make tiny updates, but i think this foundation is here to stay forever!

toni.zone 3 changes

  • removed post thumbnails
  • removed post descriptions
  • minimalized the homepage
    • added big button to homepage
  • switched from github pages to a proper web server!
    • yes, this costs more money
    • i was spending $50 a year on something to use on a barely-monthly basis
    • now i'm spending $110 a year on something to use every day
  • refactored website to use custom express.js library instead of jekyll
    • (bye-bye, rubylang, i won't miss you)
    • (hello nginx, i'm kinda stupid sometimes, please don't mind me!)
  • re-added 404 page splash texts
  • simplified / streamlined category system
    • renamed "posts" category to "blogs"
    • and also added a few more categories (more to come!)

also, um. probably not a huge deal to most people--especially since these are gonna be washed into the sands of the past soon enough anyway?--but all the posts from the 1.0 and 2.0 incarnations of toni.zone have had their "file modified" times mixed up. in lieu of actual ways to fix it, i have sadly only found useless ai slop and a bunch of people on stack overflow from 7 years ago saying "hoping someone gets you an answer!" for now, have this poem as recompense. :>
